NASA launches SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

Without a doubt, 2020 has been one of the most horrific years in recent history. However, contrary to popular belief, there actually were some good events that occured in 2020. Through all the bad in the world, it is vital to find the good. Every year, this can be extremely difficult to do, but 2020 was on a whole other level. With a global pandemic, controversial political movements, and many deaths of famous celebrities, it is safe to say 2020 was difficult for everyone. However, through all of the struggles, there was plenty of good that came out of 2020 that has been overlooked.

Of all of the good things that took place in 2020, one of the most notable is SpaceX launching its astronauts into space for the first time. May 30 was a day to remember for Americans as the SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket, designed and built by Elon Musk’s company, was launched into outer space. This was the first launch to orbit from the United States in over a decade. Originally, the launch was set to take place on May 27, but was postponed due to poor weather. Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken were the astronauts launched, and it took approximately 19 hours to reach the International Space Station, which happens to be a little over 400 kilometers above the Earth. They stayed at the ISS for nearly eight months and returned back to Earth safely on Jan.12, 2021.

Other great news from 2020 was the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine. Led by scientists from Pfizer and Moderna, medical professionals and people at high risk are the first in line to get vaccinated. While over two million lives have been lost worldwide, the vaccine gives a tremendous amount of hope to citizens. Although the vaccine is currently only available to a select group of people, it will be offered to all citizens across the country soon.

While this past presidential election was a controversial one, it was certainly very memorable. The presidential election had a lot more to debate than most, with COVID-19 and climate change being the main points of focus. The election had the highest voter turnout since 1900, this may have been caused by the global pandemic, and how the people felt about which candidate would handle it best. Regardless of people’s opinions on the outcome of the election, it is safe to say that it is great seeing more Americans getting involved in the world of politics and fighting for what they believe in.

Events like these need more recognition, as they can change so much about the world. Some people may look at these things for one second and forget about them the next, but it is crucial to realize that these are the type of things that will help continue improving the world as a whole.
