A Guide to Discover New Music

Have you ever been listening to a playlist you have created and realized that you are bored of all the same songs on repeat? So what do you do? Well, you need to find some new songs, but maybe you don’t know where to look. Well, if you continue reading, I will give you some of the best ways to find new music brought to you by our very own Berkley students.
One of the most popular ways of finding new music among the three students I talked to was from their friends and family. Sophomores Ashley Rolands and Allie Capuano both explained how their friends helped them with finding new music. When they hear a song they like that a friend is playing, they ask for the name of the song or use Shazam to find out so that they can add it to their playlist. Capuano adds how she “steals music from friends.” Meaning that she follows her friends on Spotify and finds songs from their playlists on her own. This is a great way not only to find more music but to have a chance to bond with friends about music tastes and music you both enjoy.
Capuano, a Spotify user, also likes to listen to the songs that Spotify plays once her playlist ends. If those songs are good, she will add them to her library, so she can listen again and again. Speaking of Spotify, Rolands likes to listen to the playlists the platform generates to find music similar to her existing taste. Spotify has many other ways to find new music as well, like the “enhance” feature for playlists. When you create a playlist on Spotify, there is an enhancement button at the top that, when clicked, will add Spotify’s recommendations. There is also the ability to select a song and click the “go to radio” button, which generates a playlist with songs similar to the chosen one.
Sophomore Harper Stacy finds a lot of her favorite music from TikTok. Her “for you page” on the platform is full of music to be discovered. “I see creators who post videos of new artists coming out with music or popular artists releasing new music soon,” she explains, “I see people trying to get their music careers started.” These new artists advertise their songs on social media platforms like TikTok to gain attention. When Stacy enjoys these small artists’ songs, she will add them to her playlist or save the album so she can listen again.
So, at the end of the day, there are so many ways to discover new songs for everyday listening, including with friends and family, music listening platforms, and social media. Now, you can get out there and do a spring cleaning of your playlists to get some new music!
