Valentine’s Day is a day full of appreciating those you love. Walking the halls of our very own Berkley High, high school couples are planning how they will be sharing their love with their partner on this special day. For the past two years, in a constant state of desperation about the personal information of their relationships, I’ve interviewed some of these Berkley couples. So, everyone, make way for the annual… BATTLE OF THE BAES PT. 3!
The first couple that I will be interviewing are two wonderful juniors, Evan Haenick and Norah Eyler. Let’s see what they have to say!
How long have you been dating?
Evan: Almost two years.
What’s your favorite thing about your partner?
Evan: She makes me smile.
Norah: His effort. He does so much for me and makes me so happy.
What’s a piece of advice for having a long-lasting relationship?
Norah: Communication.
Evan: Talk everything out.
What is a pet peeve that you have of your partner?
Evan: She’s always late to everything. It makes me a little annoyed.
Norah: You exaggerate time. Like you will say something took two hours when really it was only forty minutes.
Who is the first and second person on your partner’s best friends list?
Evan: We are each other’s number one on Snapchat. I think her second is either Sophie or Talia.
Norah: It’s Sophie. I don’t know your second.
Evan: It’s Jack Kwartowitz.
Norah: Ohh that makes sense.
What is your partner’s dream job?
Evan: Ummm…
Norah: Come on! I told you this yesterday!
Evan: It’s real estate!
Norah: Yes! He wants to do something with cars.
Evan: Yes, I do.
Tell me about your first date.
Evan: It was at Blaze.
Norah: No!
Evan: Yes!
Norah: NO! It was the movie theater!
Evan: Oh Yeah!! The movie theater. It was past curfew at Emagine Theatre to be able to watch a movie without an adult, so we had to go with my mom. And we were the only three in the whole theater.
Norah: The movie was West Side Story. It was a little awkward, but it was obvious that we both liked each other.
What are your Valentine’s Day plans?
Evan: Do we have plans?
Norah: No, not really.
Evan: We have gifts picked out for each other already, but we haven’t chosen a place where we are going out to dinner yet.
Wowa! Those cutie patooties are beyond adorable. Next up, juniors Lauren Eastman and Hannah Collins show us just how spectacular they are together!
How long have you been dating?
Hannah: Over two years… I don’t know the specifics!
What’s your favorite thing about your partner?
Hannah: You first.
Lauren: You can go first!
Hannah: No, I insist! Well, let me think. We are always on the same wavelength.
Lauren: They know everything about pop culture and movies and stuff like that, and I don’t know anything, so I am always being enlightened by them.
Hannah: Yes, she knows nothing about the things I am talking about, but she lets me ramble and always listens.
What’s a piece of advice for having a long-lasting relationship?
Lauren: Communication is key.
Hannah: Yes definitely. Communication and quality time are so important.
What is a pet peeve that you have of your partner?
Hannah: Hm, let me think
Lauren: I don’t know!
Hannah: I thought of one. You always make me pick what to do.
Lauren: I’m indecisive?
Hannah: No, you just always make me pick.
Lauren: Oh I have one. You crack your knuckles a lot and your neck and I hate it.
Hannah: Also, you’re never late
Lauren: That’s a pet peeve?
Hannah: Yes. You are never late and sometimes I want you to be.
Who is the first and second person on your partner’s best friends list?
Hannah: Umm… I don’t have Snapchat. But if I did, then we would be each other’s number one!
What is your partner’s dream job?
Hannah: She wants to travel the world, playing flute professionally.
Lauren: Yes!
Hannah: I feel like mine changes.
Lauren: Yes, yours changes a lot! You said the other day you would want to be a special ed teacher.
Hannah: And I want to be a psychologist.
Tell me about your first date.
Hannah: We walked to the bookstore, Toad Vine. Then we went back to my house and played Rummikub. And we barely talked to each other.
Lauren: Hey it was a long time ago!
Hannah: It was fun!
What are your Valentine’s Day plans?
Hannah: I guess we will make them right now! What should we do? We will probably go out to dinner somewhere.
Lauren: Yes, we will go out to dinner. And get Thai Food.
Hannah: Yes, Thai Food. And we will bake cookies in heart shapes!
Lauren: And we will paint.
Hannah: We will do some crafts.
Lauren: Yes, we will craft and sip!Hannah: Yes, we will sip on Ale-8.
Lauren: It is a soda from Kentucky. We went to Kentucky together once and discovered this soda. We’ve been drinking it ever since!
Hannah: We like the cherry flavor the best.
It is undeniable that those two fit perfectly together! Our third couple is two wonderful sophomores named Mekhi Harris and Emma Pollock. Will they wow us like the rest did?
How long have you been dating?
Emma: Almost five months.
What’s your favorite thing about your partner?
Emma: The way that he cares about me.
Mekhi: The way she understands me. She gets me more than anybody I know.
What is a pet peeve that you have of your partner?
Mekhi: When she can’t hear me. She really needs a hearing aid. I have to repeat myself like forty times.
Emma: When he easily gets upset at me when it’s my fault.
Who is the first and second person on your partner’s best friends list?
Mekhi: We are each other’s number one best friend. The second person on her best friends list is Ariel. It’s her best friend from Troy High School.
Emma: His second on his best friends list is Christian Hilliard.
What is your partner’s dream job?
Emma: You said that you wanted to go into psychology.
Mekhi: I don’t even know yours. Oh god, I feel bad! Isn’t yours like real estate?
Emma: No, it’s interior design.
Tell me about your first date.
Mekhi: I took her to 220 Merril in Birmingham and we dressed up pretty nice. My pockets were hurting after that one, but it was nice. Very cute.
Emma: Yes, it was very cute. It was in late August.
What are your Valentine’s Day plans?
Mekhi: We planned a surprise for each other.
I asked Mekhi and Emma what they planned for each other:
Emma: I’m getting both of us these matching Lego keychains of Batman: one in pink and one in black. And then I am going to get him an article of clothing and wrap it in kiss-marked tissue paper.
Mekhi: For Christmas, I had gotten her a one hundred-dollar pink rose arrangement. Now that they are dead, I am going to get her the same thing but in a different color. Also, Chick-Fil-A makes a thirty-piece nugget-shaped heart which I will give to her since Chick-Fil-A is her favorite fast food.
Young love at its finest! Our next couple has a close-knit bond that is full of love! Juniors Kyle Gabriel and Emma Sove let me know more about them.
How long have you been dating?
Emma: Nine months.
What’s your favorite thing about your partner?
Kyle: Her personality. She is so caring and always willing to talk things out.
Emma: His heart. He is always so sweet and caring. He is always there for me. If I’m ever having a bad day, he’s the first person I run to.
What’s a piece of advice for having a long-lasting relationship?
Emma: Talk things out.
Kyle: Being best friends.
Who is the first and second person on your partner’s best friends list?
Emma: We are each other’s number one.
Kyle: I don’t even know my second person.
Emma: Normally, it’s one of his guy friends.
Kyle: I just looked, it’s Sean. Who’s yours?
Emma: Atiana.
What is your partner’s dream job?
Kyle: She wants to go into sports medicine.
Emma: He wants to be a firefighter.
Tell me about your first date.
Kyle: It was on Valentine’s Day.
Emma: No, at that point we weren’t even close to being together. Our first date was probably like three months into our relationship. I don’t even remember it. And we probably got sushi. I think all of our dates have been getting sushi.
What are your Valentine’s Day plans?
Kyle: We are going to Sedona Taphouse.
Emma: And we will probably get dessert after.
Through thick and thin, all of these couples seem to have an unbreakable bond. With Norah and Evan’s closeness, Hannah and Lauren’s humor, Mekhi and Emma’s considerateness, and Emma and Kyle’s compassion, these couples are truly amazing. Whether you are in a relationship or not, I hope that this Valentine’s Day is filled with fun and love!
