Since the attack on October 7, 2023 by Hamas, the people of Israel have experienced a profound sense of loss and mourning, yet have come together in remarkable ways. Regardless of differences, such as different cultural beliefs and views on politics. The Israeli people have supported and comforted each other during this difficult time. This collective mourning has encouraged a sense of empathy and togetherness throughout the whole country.
I interviewed Noa Elhay, (the cousin of writer) who is a young adult living in a Kibbutz (communal settlement) called Yad Mordechai in Israel. When asked how the Israeli people have supported each other over the past few months, Elhay replied, “On October 7th the people of Israel were put through such a tragic event and ever since then we have all been supporting each other and recovering together as one. We all volunteer and raise money so that as a nation we can get through this and show everyone that we are strong, determined, and we will never give up.”
Elhay believes that being a part of the Israeli community during this difficult time means that “We must have each other’s backs. So many of us lost friends or family members on October 7, but we must stay strong and united. The Israeli people have a very important connection to each other and to our country, and we would do anything for the two.”
According to The Jerusalem Post, many Israelis are volunteering and doing whatever they can to help each other in Israel. In communities across the country, neighbors are reaching out to one another, offering support and assistance however they can. From organizing meal deliveries for elderly residents unable to leave their homes, to providing emotional support to those struggling with trauma, Israelis are demonstrating the true meaning of unity. Moreover, businesses are stepping up to contribute, with many offering free services or donating supplies or food to the Israeli soldiers fighting in the army. These acts of kindness and generosity highlight the commitment of the Israeli people to stand together and support one another through even the darkest of times.
Many charities and fundraisers have appeared to help those affected by the ongoing conflict. They offer various kinds of support, from immediate aid to long-term assistance for families who have suffered loss or displacement. One such group, HopeCounsel, concentrates on providing trauma counseling and mental health support to individuals and families dealing with the emotional aftermath of rocket attacks. They hold therapy sessions, support groups, and community events to help affected communities recover and stay strong.
