As I sit down in my favorite study spot, I relax into a sense of focus. I sink into the chair and get comfortable. Many people around me are immersed in their homework, motivating me to do the same. I put my headphones on and get to work. Some of Berkley High School students’ favorite places to study include Atomic coffee, Desert Oasis, the Ferndale library, and the Birmingham Library.
Having a good study spot is helpful to improve how you focus and the amount of work you get done. By having a good study spot, studies show according to North Lake Behavioral Health that “having a designated study area can greatly enhance focus and productivity.”
In order to see what Berkely students thought about a good study environment and what their favorite spot was, I talked to a few students at Berkley High School to gain some insight.
Junior Lily Rogers’ favorite study spot is Atomic Coffee located in downtown Royal Oak. She goes around two to three times a week. This is her favorite place to study because she gets more work done than at home and feels more focused. Rogers said, “I like to study in Atomic coffee because the environment helps me stay focused and there is a great variety of seating.” As she walks in the door of Atomic coffee she immediately feels comfortable and ready to work.
The Ferndale Library is junior Mari Strat’s favorite; she attends this library normally once a week. It has become her favorite because it’s quiet and not many people go to this place so it’s very peaceful and has a calming environment. One of her favorite features are the little nooks that are separate from everyone. When she goes to the library she gets more work done and feels like she is in a safe place while she’s doing it.
Senior Sari Wagner prefers the Birmingham Library. She studies there typically twice a week. Wagner prefers this study space because she’s more productive there than at home. It’s also a great place to socialize with her friends from other schools. According to Wagner, “When I study with my friends they make me more accountable for the work I need to do.” This place makes her feel like she’s working hard. Some of Wagner’s favorite features in this library are the wide variety of seating arrangements with open and private spots within the library to study.
Senior Alexandra Valencia Arcila’s study spot of choice is Desert Oasis located in downtown Royal Oak. She attends this place twice a week. It’s her favorite because the people there are always so sweet. The vibe of the place is very calming and peaceful. One of her favorite features about this place is that they have super comfortable couches that are perfect if you need to grind out an essay or any other homework. She said “Desert Oasis makes me feel very studious” She also describes it as a space that gives her an idea of the type of place she feels will be beneficial to her in college when she needs to study. An added bonus to this place is the food is great.
Each of these study spots have different features that make them good places to study! The highlights of each spot are Atomic Coffees’ amount of seating, Ferndale library nooks, Birmingham Libraries wide variety of places to sit, and Desert Oasis’s people and food. Having a study spot is so great to have a place to go and get all your work done away from home. You’ll have less distractions and will feel good to get out of the house and study in a different environment. Next time you need to have an intense study session, maybe think about trying one of these study spots out!
