As the fall sports season wraps up and winter arrives, the girls basketball, boys basketball, and wrestling teams are already deep into preparations, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting season. Here’s a look at how some of these teams are preparing and what can be expected from them in the coming months. As the season approaches, girls basketball, boys basketball, and wrestling are all getting started with intense conditioning, tryouts, and practices.
Coming off of a great season where they fell just short of regionals, the wrestling team has been preparing for months. According to freshman wrestler Joseph Dauphin, the team has been preparing since summer, initially training twice a week. Since November, they’ve intensified their regimen to daily two-hour sessions. “We have been doing a lot of conditioning, mental preparedness, and obviously wrestling.” When asked what we can expect from the team this year Dauphin said, “I think we should have a pretty good season up and down the lineup. I think our goal this season is to get everyone to regionals and to see where we can go in the postseason.” Dauphin is confident in the team this year saying: “We have a good team with a lot of hard workers and I think if we stay consistent we can go pretty far.” In short, the wrestling team has been working hard and they are more than ready for the upcoming season.
The girls basketball team has been hard at work, looking to have another great year as the season approaches. Three-year varsity player junior Nadia Watt says, “We have been working really hard. We’ve had a lot of open gyms and conditioning in the past two weeks.” Watt is confident in how the team will perform this year saying, “I think we’re gonna be good. We’ve been working really well together and everyone has shown up so I think that’s going to have a big impact on this season.” Watt also addressed last year’s season, commenting, “We had a really good season last year. There were a lot of changes; we got a new coach and we are losing some seniors, but I think our new seniors this year are going to be great leaders and that should carry us through the season.” Overall, girls’ basketball should have a strong and successful season.
The boy’s basketball team is ready to kick off the season. The boys have been preparing with open gyms, tryouts, and two grueling weeks of conditioning. According to varsity co-captain senior Jacob Friedman, the team will face some challenges this season. “Losing nine seniors on a 13-person team is going to make a difference this season,” he said. Friedman still remains confident in the team saying, “Once we can develop some senior leadership and get everyone familiar with the varsity game, we have a great shot at winning leagues and districts.” Friedman addressed another challenge the team usually faces, saying, “With such a long season, people can lose interest and disengage, especially during the cold, depressing winter months.” Friedman isn’t too concerned about this challenge because last year the team spent lots of time bonding off the court and building relationships. Despite some challenges, the team is entering the season with a sense of confidence and preparedness and they are optimistic about their chances for a successful run.
As winter sports get underway, all three teams share the same determination to work hard and succeed. With their dedication and teamwork, we can look forward to an exciting season full of great moments on the Berkley court and mat.
