Classroom 209 opens up a math universe to Algebra and Algebra 2 students at Berkley High School. As you walk in, to your left is the Affirmation Station, AKA a mirror. This mirror has motivating signs around it that motivate students to be more positive about their self-image. Ms. Hanna Kachl’s classroom decor, from the Affirmation Station to her blue-themed accents, reflects her vibrant and supportive teaching style. On the first day of school, Ms. Hanna Kachl suggested that her students call Ms. HK for quicker communication. The decoration in Ms. HK’s room is a unique feature that stands out from many other classrooms. She has a breath mint bucket and a calendar for students’ birthdays. Her favorite color is blue, so the numerous blue details in her room bring a personal touch to her classroom. Her good decoration helped shape the physical view of her teaching life and is one of the numerous reasons why students see her as such a good teacher.
Ms. HK’s love of math stemmed from her amazing teachers growing up, particularly her sophomore Algebra 2 teacher. Ms. HK comments further on her Algebra 2 teacher by saying, “His encouragement stayed with me, and we still keep in touch today. He’s been my biggest cheerleader on this journey, and his support solidified my decision to become a teacher.” With that motivation, Ms. HK recently graduated from Oakland University. Even back then, her teacher asked her if she ever considered education a career she would pursue. She was often found re-explaining things to her classmates. The encouragement and motivation from her teacher pushed her to pursue her passion and helped shape her into the incredible teacher she is.
Many students walk into her class with a buzzing excitement, loving the encouragement she adds to the school atmosphere. Junior Noah Golembiewski shares, “Even from the first day, I trusted [Ms. HK] and she makes me feel very heard.” Golembiewski goes on by saying, “I can be myself in the class which I don’t always feel in other classes. I feel safe to go with her with issues and ask her for help without feeling intimidated.” Ms. HK intentionally creates a supportive environment for her students with the knowledge that they don’t always have a comfort zone. Every Friday she has a Google Form for students to fill out to check in to make sure they are okay. Golembiewski comments that this simple gesture makes him and other students feel safe. Ms. HK is the perfect example of the right pick for Teacher of The Month. Her exhilarating personality, outgoing education skills, and proficient demeanor shape her into the respected and admired teacher she is.
Outside of the main subject of math, Ms. HK comments, “My favorite part is being a safe space for students who may not have that opportunity outside of my classroom. It’s rewarding to know I can provide them with support and care, both academically and personally.” Ms. HK loves to see students work through the challenges of solving problems and critical thinking that come with math. She explains that seeing students grow educationally with her help gives her a sense of purpose and happiness.
Outside the classroom, Ms. HK busies herself with family and friends. When she was in high school she participated in year-round cheer (sideline and competitive) and ran track. She carried her love for exercising to her adulthood and often spends her time trying new workouts or at spin classes. When she isn’t working out or spending time with family/friends, she has her Kindle to read and a good puzzle next to her (when she has the brainpower to do them). Currently, Ms. HK is working towards her Masters of Education in Health and Wellness, she adds, “I’m halfway through [my masters]”. Ms. HK shares that her goal is “to continue teaching but at the college level. Some of the higher-level college math classes I took were incredibly enjoyable, and I’d love the opportunity to teach those after my time in public schools.” As for now, she is a loved Algebra and Algebra 2 teacher here with us at Berkley. As she continues to inspire her students and pursue her goals, Ms. HK exemplifies what it means to make a difference.
