While walking through the halls in Berkley, I have often seen bright screens filled with colorful blocks on students’ phones. What is filling their screens with such vibrant colors is the hottest new addiction, Block Blast. Reaching a new high score, getting as many points as possible, and connecting different blocks to make shapes are all key objectives in the game. Something about the game has been very hypnotizing to students at BHS.
Released in the U.S. on April 3rd, 2022, Block Blast was developed by Hungry Studio, a South Korean gaming studio. The game has over ten million downloads and five million active users worldwide, including those from India, the USA, Canada, Japan, and France. It can be downloaded on iOS and Android devices. The game is for all ages. There are also different game modes, such as Adventure where you embark on a journey through various levels and challenges, or Classic mode where you connect blocks and clear the board for points.
Block Blast is a Tetris-like puzzle game that offers an engaging way to pass the time while also providing a mental challenge. The goal of the puzzle game is to match and clear as many colored blocks as possible on the board. To clear the blocks you need to fill a row or column with blocks, once a row or column is filled it disappears and gives you points and more space to continue playing. As you progress through levels, the complexity increases, challenging your problem-solving skills and requiring quick thinking. The game features vibrant graphics and engaging sound effects that enhance the overall experience, making it both visually appealing and enjoyable to play. I was able to talk to a Berkley student to get their opinions on why they love Block Blast.
I talked to Junior Tali Dines who loves to play Block Blast to hear her input on the game. She said she likes to play because “It is a great passing time game and when you play the time goes by quickly. Beating your high score is like a weight lifted off your chest and telling people that you beat your high score is fascinating.”
The game is also very addictive for her because she constantly tries to beat her high score. Also knowing she has as many chances to beat her high score makes her want to keep playing. She decided to download it because one of her friends told her about it and it looked super fun. I also asked her if she ever plays Block Blast during school and she said, “Yes I play Block Blast during school a lot when I have free time in my classes, and any chance I get I like to play it.” Overall, Dines is a big fan of Block Blast and recommends that you should try playing if you have not.
There are many pros and cons of Block Blast. Some cons are that there are ads in the game which can be annoying and frustrating when you are trying to play. Another con is that the game can be very time-consuming, and it can take away from doing other things when you are playing it. Considering these cons, there are also many pros. For example, the game is very easy to learn and is a great game for beginners. Another pro is that the game is great to play with your friends and discuss. I think anyone who loves to play puzzle games or just mobile games in general, would love to play Block Blast.
