While winter break is the perfect time for Michiganders to escape the cold and head down south, it’s also a great time to check some places off of their bucket list. At Berkley, several students traveled to some unique places worldwide. Let’s take a look at where they traveled, why they chose to go there, and learn all about what made their trips so memorable.
To start, I interviewed freshman Moe Woll about his trip to London and Paris. Woll shared, “My family decided to go to London and Paris because we wanted to see all of the cool things they had to offer.” When asking Woll what the highlight of his trip was, he expressed that “Seeing the Notre Dame in Paris was the highlight of [his] trip because it was recently burned down from a fire, so they rebuilt it.” Woll added, “It was really cool to see because it’s a very old historical site.” When asked about what made his trip so special, Woll shared, “Since not a lot of people can travel to places across the ocean, I felt really lucky to have the opportunity to see London and Paris and learn all about them.” Woll also described how “The Mona Lisa in the Louvre stood out to me because it is one of the most famous paintings in the world, and it was incredible to see it in person.” Finally, when asking Woll if he recommends going there, he enthusiastically said, “Absolutely! They have so many cool things to see, and I learned so much new information.”
Next, I interviewed junior Koto Watanabe about his trip to Japan. Watanabe shared that, “We went to Japan to visit friends and family.” When asked what the highlight of his trip was, Watanabe shared that it was “definitely being able to see my mom’s side of the family because we only see them once a year.” When asked what made Watanabe’s trip so special, he shared that “Being able to make memories and take cool pictures was really nice.” Watanabe added on by describing how “It was very crazy to see temples that are so old, and I was really amazed at the fact that they are all hand-made.” Finally, when asking Watanabe if he recommends going there, without hesitation he said, “Oh yes, 100%. There are so many attractions for people all around the world to see, and there is so much great food to enjoy.”
Lastly, I interviewed senior Justin Findling about his trip to Morocco. Findling shared that his family “traveled to Morocco because [his] dad’s mom is from Morocco.” Findling added, “We went there to see where we came from and learn a little bit more about the history, especially about the Jewish people living in Morocco.” When asked Findling what the highlight of his trip was, he shared, “The highlight of my trip was the day when we rode some camels in the Sahara desert, and then later we rented some ATVs. It was a really cool experience.” When asked what made his trip so special, Findling described how “Knowing that [his] ancestors were from there and being able to go back and kind of just see how they lived and where they lived was special.” Findling added, “We also had a chance to visit my great grandma’s old house as well as the city that she was from, which was cool to see.” Findling then went on to share how “A city called Fes was very interesting to see because it felt like [they] were walking through like an old 1800s market.” Finally, when asking Findling if he recommends going there, he enthusiastically shared, “I do recommend going there because I expected it to be a very poor country, but it wasn’t like that at all. It is rich in culture, and I think everyone should visit Morocco because it’s very cool.”
Overall, after learning about these three trips, I think that it’s safe to say that you should add these destinations to your bucket list. Paris, London, Japan, and Morocco offer so many great places to visit, things to learn, and new experiences!
