Students might see a new face in the halls this year – Mr. Brian Ericson, the new assistant principal. He previously worked at Chandler Park Academy in Harper Woods, Michigan, serving as assistant principal, before becoming principal for ten years. As the new assistant principal, his goal is to help support the students and staff here at Berkley High School.
When asked about his background and what inspired him to be an assistant principal, Mr. Ericson responded, “I was inspired to pursue education because I had a couple of really good teachers in high school who helped me when I was going through some family problems at home, so that inspired me to go into education.” He also said that he had the opportunity to work on the school improvement team, where he could listen to students to identify positive changes they could make. This inspired him to go into leadership. Mr. Ericson shared a few facts about himself. For example, he received his education at Michigan State and is a marathon runner in his free time.
When asked why he decided to work at BHS, he explained that some of his former colleagues had experience with the school. “They said great things about Berkley, including the culture, family atmosphere, and the students and staff.”
Mr. Ericson expressed enthusiasm about joining the school and already believes it is a great place to be. Reflecting on his experience so far, he shared, “Everyone’s been really welcoming, students are excellent, and the staff has been great.” It’s clear that he is enjoying Berkley and appreciates its atmosphere.
I then questioned what his philosophy is on supporting students and teachers in creating a positive school environment. He emphasized the importance of accountability and support. He stated, “It’s important to provide support as students grow and mature.”
Finally, I asked Mr. Ericson if there was anything else he would like Berkley students to know about him. He stated, “I’m just really happy to be here, and I have an open-door policy. If there are any issues with classes, academic behavior, or other students. Everyone’s more than welcome to come in, and we’ll work through anything.”
When talking with him, he seemed very caring and eager to help out students and staff. For example, as you may see him in the hallways, he is engaging with Berkley students. Throughout his interview, Mr. Ericson continued to state how it is “very important to provide support” and that is the main thing that he hopes to contribute to.
Now that we have another assistant principal, hopefully, he can make Berkley High School an even better school, and more people will have support. Another person in the building here to help means yet another staff member students have the opportunity to talk to and connect with, which is precisely Mr. Ericson’s goal. If you see him in the hallways, make sure to say hi and get to know our new assistant principal as well as show him the amazing students at BHS!
