As many Detroit fans know, the Pistons and Red Wings have not made the playoffs in many years. However, this year could be different. The Pistons have not made a playoff appearance since 2019 and the Red Wings have not appeared since 2016. Both teams have had some of the best seasons they have had in a while and are now on a post-All-Star-Break, which means one thing, playoff pushes.
Detroit Pistons
The Pistons are currently 38-31 and are coming off an 8-game win streak that ended with a loss to the Denver Nuggets. They followed that loss with an over-20-point win against the Brooklyn Nets and after all of this, the Pistons are currently in a playoff spot. It is crazy to think that the Pistons are in a good place for the playoffs because last season they were the worst team in the league and had one of the worst records ever. They also are tied for the worst losing streak of all time last season with 28 straight losses. One of Detroit’s great young players, Jaden Ivey, broke his left fibula on Jan 1. This was bad for the Pistons as he is a key player. He averaged over 17 points per game and started to play even better. Unfortunately, he does not have a timeline for a return currently, but it is possible that he will come back later this season. Right before the trade deadline on Feb 6, the Pistons made a trade with the Utah Jazz which sent them a draft pick, and we received Dennis Schroder. Since his arrival, he has been a great contributor to their success with scoring and assists. The most impressive thing about this Pistons run is how head coach JB Bickerstaff turned things around in just one season. He has helped the Pistons go from being the worst in the league to a playoff-contending team. For the Pistons to keep up this success they need to have overall good games for multiple players and not just rely on one player.
Detroit Red Wings
The Red Wings are currently 32-29-6 but have been 2-6 since the all-star break. One of these losses came on Mar 1 and was an outdoor game in Columbus against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Since most games are indoors this was a big game and an honor, but sadly lost 3-5.
Earlier this season on December 26th they fired their coach, Derek Lalonde, and hired a replacement coach, Todd McLellan. After a bad loss in the first game he coached, the Red Wings followed that up by winning seven games straight. After winning more games they found themselves at the first spot in the wild card. It appeared as if their season was over, but now they are in a potential playoff position which is extremely impressive. Unfortunately, the Red Wings have the hardest remaining schedule in the league, so their playoff push will be very challenging.
To be able to accomplish this, General Manager Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings should make a trade before the trade deadline on Mar 7. Getting a player could be the thing they need to keep winning and make the playoffs. On Mar 5, they were involved in a three-team trade with the Seattle Kraken and the Tampa Bay Lighting. They acquired forward Yanni Gourde from the Kraken and immediately traded him to the Lightning for a fourth-round pick. They needed to fill a hole at center after Andrew Copp was announced out for the season with a torn pectoral tendon. This is what the Red Wings did on Mar 7 right before the deadline. They received Petr Mrazek and Craig Smith from the Chicago Blackhawks and sent them Joe Veleno. Mrazek is a goalie so this will give us more depth. However, he has the 45th best save percentage in the NHL with saving .890% of goals. Smith is a center that should hopefully help fill a needed position. He has nine goals and seven assists so far this season.
Both of these teams are having great seasons and both could possibly make the playoffs. There are just certain things they both need to work on for a good playoff push. For the Red Wings, it’s to make a trade and play very hard to keep winning during this late-season stretch of the hardest schedule in the league. The Pistons should hopefully get their team healthy with Jaden Ivey coming back and have the depth of players doing great in games. These things could result in bringing back playoff hockey and basketball to the Motor City.
