Berkley students have been taking pictures at sports games, matches, and events since the beginning of this year, many students have gotten high-quality digital cameras and take time out of their busy schedules to capture pictures at these events. Ever since these students have been doing this, Berkley athletics has drawn a lot of attention through social media. It is very intriguing to see how creative and talented these students are through their pictures, videos, and edits. In this article, we can learn more about the behind-the-scenes of this.
Athletes appreciate seeing photos of their hard work during games. Having your picture taken during a game makes you feel recognized and appreciated. I was able to talk to junior Emmy Warner, who you might also know as @em.w.media on Instagram. I was able to learn a lot of information about why she takes pictures for Berkley sports.
Warner has been practicing photography since March 2024 because it is special to her. Her uncle is a videographer for a sports company, which inspired her interest. So she started to get into photography because he gave her a lot of his old equipment, and she had a lot of fun with it. She said, “I’ve always loved going to sporting events and watching sports. I’m very competitive in that way, so I enjoy seeing everyone putting in all the hard work.”
Typically, Warner spends about two and a half hours capturing photos at a basketball game, followed by an hour of editing through CapCut on her laptop.
As an athlete, Warner noticed girls’ sports didn’t get much coverage compared to the attention other sports were getting. This inspired her to start taking pictures at events. She thought that they deserved to be seen, so she took things into her own hands and started taking pictures for women’s sports. “Women in sports are just so incredible, and everyone deserves to be seen and recognized, so I was inspired by that,” she said.

Warner has received a lot of positive feedback from coaches and athletes since she started taking pictures and posting them to her Instagram account. She noted, “I have received a lot of love; it’s been a lot of fun seeing how people react to seeing pictures of themselves, taking pictures, and seeing all my friends at sporting events too, and everyone’s just really grateful and supportive.”
Aside from Warner, many other students dedicate their time and creativity to photographing Berkley athletics. Sophomore, Julian Glass and junior, Eli Khoury (@jgk.films) have also been taking pictures of different teams for a year now. Glass and Khoury began taking pictures together because they were inspired by their family members, who encouraged them to explore photography to expand their creativity. They mainly focus on Berkley Football and Basketball, and sometimes they take pictures for other schools if they are interested in the school. Sophomore Jordan Weissman (@12mile.photography) just started taking pictures for the teams this school year, and his photos are really unique and use many different colored filters with high quality.
Overall, it is inspiring to see how talented these students are through their action shots, different colored pictures, and edits. The impact these students will have on the future of photography at Berkley will inspire and influence others who aspire to follow in their footsteps. Seeing how much dedication, time, creativity, and work they put into taking pictures shows how big of a passion they have for it. It will continue to be exciting to watch their skills continue to grow and improve over time!
