Sports. What a great thing. It is a form of entertainment that can sway one’s emotions from extremely thrilled to furious in a matter of seconds. People’s lives can be drastically changed by the bare inches of a football, the degree in which someone swings a bat, the seconds it takes to shoot a basketball, or the strange bounce of a hockey puck. There is nothing like it in my opinion. It is one of my favorite forms of entertainment, but during certain times of the year, it can be my favorite thing. Here is a ranking of all the months, worst to best, based on how exciting the sports are during that time.
12. July
MLB season. It is a sluggish time for sports in July. Baseball is relaxing, complex, engaging, but slow. Slow. 162 games of players swinging sticks at rocks– and it’s the middle of the season. Baseball is great, don’t get me wrong, but it is the only thing happening. The NBA and NHL are done, and there is nothing else; it is the ultimate month of boredom.
11. February
The Super Bowl, NBA All-Star break, NHL All-Star break, and College Basketball Season. February has some bright spots, but some very low lows. Besides the Super Bowl, football is over. It is one game that is sometimes exciting, but it is basically over for thirty other fan bases. There is a stretch in the middle of the month when the NBA and NHL are on their All-Star breaks, and that is the worst time of the year. The only sport going on is mid-season college basketball; it is a rough month in the sports world.
10. August
MLB season, College Football season. This is when sports start to pick up. The NFL is just around the corner, college Football begins, and baseball is hitting the home stretch. But, for the first half of the month, it is the same feeling as July, nothing. The most exciting thing about the month is the talk and chatter about what is happening after August, not during August. It is a bit like drinking water when you’re thirsty, and realizing the bottle only has a few drops left.
9. June
MLB season, NBA Finals, NHL Finals. This month is decided by how good the NBA and NHL finals are. If one team dominates the other, and nothing is exciting about them, then June isn’t a very exciting month. It has a high potential, such as when the 2016 NBA finals, where Lebron James and Steph Curry were going back and forth with one of the greatest finals, if not the greatest NBA finals of all time. That would boost June higher in the rankings, but that rarely happens. In contrast to the inconsistent finals, it’s a good and consistent time in the MLB season, it is when players start their streaks and slumps, teams shine and fall, and playoff-destined teams are being discussed.
8. September
NFL season, MLB Season/Playoffs, College Football season. September is when things really get started. Once the NFL season starts, sports entertainment explodes. I love September; it has very few flaws, but it only has three sports going on. The MLB playoff spots get filled, and baseball fans get ready for October. On the negative side, the College Football season is at its lowest point. The beginning of the season is a lot of blowouts and unfair games between powerhouse teams and unknown schools, but it is still College Football, which is a lot better than nothing.
7. April
MLB season, NBA season/Playoffs, NHL Season/Playoffs, NCAA basketball tournament. April is fantastic. It has almost everything a fan could want, but its surrounding months are just better. March Madness has the name March for a reason; April is its sibling. It also starts the NBA and NHL playoffs, great! The most exciting part of those playoffs– in my opinion, is the later rounds, not the four-game sweeps that often happen in April.
6. DecemberCollege football playoffs, NFL Season, NBA Season, NHL season. This is a great time of the year. It’s the holidays, it’s winter, and it’s got some great sports. I personally love December for sports, but sports aren’t the main part of the month. It is topped by the holidays and snow. The College Football Playoffs should increase the entertainment in this month, but I am hesitant to really appreciate the CFP until we see a good year of it. But still, this is a great month of sports.
5. May
MLB season, NBA Playoffs, NHL Playoffs. Not all fans get their team in May. Depending on how good their hockey team and basketball team is, the month’s prominence varies. Even if a fan doesn’t have a playoff team, the NBA and NHL playoffs are still so fun to watch. MLB is in full swing, with players breaking out, teams forming chemistry, and experts making predictions. Unfortunately, it has no championships, and for that reason, it can’t be higher on the list.
4. January
NFL season/playoffs, College Football Playoffs, NHL season, NBA season. It’s winter, the holidays have passed, and it is a great time to turn on the television and watch some sports. Football is at its peak, where the Super Bowl matchup is decided in the NFL, and the College Football Playoffs are completed. The NHL and NBA are less popular at this time, but are still very enjoyable to watch when there is no football on. January is sports beauty; pure beauty.
3. November
MLB World Series (sometimes), NFL season, College Football season, College Basketball season, NHL season, NBA season. This is the next tier of months. All the sports could touch this month. All of them. The MLB World Series can reach November, it is just a matter of whether the championship goes to six or seven games. Besides that, NFL Football is in its regular season’s best time, where all the teams have a chance, and the fall weather makes it even more special. College Football is nearing the playoffs, and College Basketball is presenting its star players as the season starts up. The NBA and NHL seasons are in full swing, with teams showing how good they are and how good they may be. November sports are jam-packed with nothing but constant entertainment.
2. March
MLB season, NBA season, NHL Season, NCAA basketball tournament. It’s weird, April has the same sports, and no professional playoffs. March is different. The feeling when March Madness tips off, and brackets succeed or fail, is sometimes my favorite time of the year. Opening day is my favorite part of the MLB season, and the baseball atmosphere is at its most united and excited time. The NBA and NHL teams make their final runs to push for the playoffs, as teams clinch in or out. There is nothing like March.
1. October
MLB playoffs, NBA Season, NHL Season, NFL season, and College Football season. Baseball fans often hear the common words of “October Baseball”. It means the MLB playoffs. It is such an exciting time in the MLB, and fans get ready for constant high-stakes games that lead up to the World Series. The NFL season is hitting its stride, with teams showing how good they are. The NBA and NHL start up in the middle to the end of the month, putting an exciting topping to this astounding month. This is when sports are most consistently exciting, and fans are most engaged. October goes by in a blur due to games just swinging in from left to right. It may not have the madness of March or the football playoffs in January, but it is when the sports world is most united and excited. It’s October, the best time of the year (in sports).
