The journey from junior varsity to varsity is not just a step up in the competition; it is time for growth, learning, and team-building. This year’s undefeated JV football squad is more than just a team; they are the future varsity players developing chemistry, skills, and mindset that will shape the program for years to come. Every practice, each game, and all of the moments together as a team are preparing each player to take on the greater challenge of varsity football.
At the heart of this JV team, there is a strong culture that pushes the players forward while encouraging everyone at the same time. This “culture” is created by the players and coaches working together to make each other better and push one another to become the best version of themselves. JV starting linebacker Laurence Bergasse says, “The JV team has a lot of fun, but we also know when we need to focus. When it comes down to it, we know how to work hard at practice and take steps forward to improve ourselves.” As a player, this atmosphere is great to be around. They get to play a game that you love, take it seriously enough to succeed and become a better player. The team culture this season is defined by encouragement, accountability, and a shared commitment from each player to improve as a team. This is something a JV team needs in order to get the players ready to dominate on varsity.
All the players on the JV team bring something different to the group, and leadership is at the top of the list. All the players on the JV team bring something different to the group, and leadership is at the top of the list. Leadership comes in all different forms. Some lead quietly and by example, showing up every day, and working hard. Doing what you are supposed to be doing, even when nobody is watching. A loud leader who plays that role means stepping up during games with big plays or vocal energy. They fire up their teammates during games and make the big plays when it matters the most. They are not afraid to speak up when there is something that needs to be said, and more importantly, they are not afraid to make a big play when the pressure is on.
Nolan Smith, a starting lineman and one of the captains of the team, says, “Being a leader is supporting my teammates on and off the field and showing them what they should or should not be doing.” His words show there has to be a balanced approach to accountability, support, and setting the example for others. Having strong leadership does not just guide a team to winning; it pushes the players to grow and expand their skills. It creates a culture where everybody can strive and become the best player they can possibly be.
Now, as the JV season continues, they are doing more than just playing games and practicing. They are laying the foundation for the future program. After every practice, head coach Victor Edge tells that team that “nobody is bigger than the program.” Through strong leadership and a hard work ethic, the Berkley football program will take steps forward to succeed. A large goal that the Berkley JV team is trying to reach is to create a program with respected and hard work. With every snap, rep, and lesson, the players learn, the team and players are moving closer and closer to a bright Berkley Bear football future.
