On September 19, 2025, the well-anticipated horror film “Him” was released in theaters, produced by the famous director Jordan Peele. Him follows a football prodigy named Cameron Cade, who is preparing to be the number one pick in the “USFF” draft. Cameron’s agent gets a call from Isaiah White, the greatest football player of all time. White says that he wants Cameron to take over as the starting quarterback of his team because he plans to retire, but he wants Cameron to train with him for a week to see if he has what it takes. Cameron agrees, but soon realizes that this process is not what he anticipated in the slightest. Though I liked the idea of the movie, I was very much disappointed. The movie was sloppy and rushed. Overall it was just not executed like it should have been
The Good:
Although I was not a fan of the movie, there were several aspects that I enjoyed, the first being the overall concept. I found the idea of taking an electric, like football, and turning it into a psychological horror is interesting and unique.eIt highlighted the flaws of professional football and professional sports, such as the corruption of owners. Another aspect that I liked was Marlon Wayans’ performance as Isaiah White. Wayans had a much more serious role than he is used to in Him, and I think he executed well especially in intense scenes. The final detail that I appreciated was the cinematography. The entire movie had extremely satisfying visuals.
The Bad:
The middle section of the movie had many flaws, even though it was the best portion. At times, it feels like I am watching the same thing happen over and over again, and there are barely any plot developments. For example, every day Cameron and Isaiah worked on a different aspect of being a pro athlete. At first I thought it was interesting, but eventually it felt repetitive and pointless. The middle was entertaining, but it just felt slightly pointless at times. Another low point in Him was Tyriq Withers’ performance as Cameron Cade. Withers’ delivery was very shallow, and there was not much personality to his character. I felt like this took away from the movie a lot, especially in important scenes, where his acting was still robotic.
The Ugly:
Going Into the last 20 minutes of the film I already was not enjoying it, but once the movie was finished, I was left even more disappointed. Him had possibly one of the worst endings that I have ever seen in a movie. The ending was incredibly rushed and did not tie back to the rest of the movie at all. Almost like a completely alternate plotline was just created. It felt like the last hour and twenty minutes of my time meant nothing to the plot after watching the ending. Overall, a very disappointing way to end a promising movie.
While die-hard Jordan Peele fans or those intrigued by the football-horror mashup might find something to appreciate, overall, I cannot recommend this film to general audiences.
