This is the fifth year in a row Berkley Girls Tennis is heading to the MHSAA Division 2 State Finals, but this year is extra special because they brought home their second regional title in the past 10 years, a few weeks earlier. With such a young team, including many new players who made their way onto the team, plus a new head coach, this was quite the accomplishment for the team. They also switched which region they are in, which determines if they will make it to states when competing at regionals. They competed against teams in the downriver region, including Trenton, Southgate Anderson, and several other schools they had not previously gone against.
After playing many challenging teams throughout the regular season, competing in numerous tournaments on the weekends, and building strong connections through several team dinners and getting ice cream after practices, which helps the team bond, grow, and support each other on and off the court, the Bears proved they were ready to compete at regionals and states. The captains, Delanie Crisenti and Nadia Fobbs, both seniors, and Piper Coon, who is a junior, ensured the singles and doubles players on the team demonstrated determination, resilience, and a strong work ethic both on and off the court.
Several players stepped up in key matches throughout the season, especially during regionals when the 4 doubles Lily Pearson and Byrdie Norton got first place, helping them be in a good position for states and overall helping them go further during the state finals. Their success reflects not only their athletic ability but also the positive team culture that has been built throughout the season. The opportunity to compete in the 2026 MHSAA Division 2 State Finals and travel to Midland was a rewarding experience for the entire team. Facing some of the top teams in Michigan, including the 2025 state champion Seaholm High School, allowed the Bears to work hard and learn how they can improve for the future and become a better team overall. With many upper and underclassmen expected to return next season, the future looks bright for Berkley Girls’ Tennis as they continue to build on another successful year. The team will continue to play during the off season to improve individually which will eventually benefit the team when they return in March 2027 for the season.
