The line while waiting to enter Azra.

Ghosts, clowns, and vampires swarming around you as you slowly walk the halls of a haunted house. This is the best part of October, going to haunted houses. Surrounding Berkley, Michigan, we have many options of where to spend your haunted month. Here you will learn about the thrill of a few haunted houses near us, and my thoughts on them on a five star basis.

Azra Haunted House Chamber of Horrors ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
The first haunted house that will make you jump is Azra Haunted House Chamber of Horrors in Madison Heights. The atmosphere while waiting to enter the haunted house is incomparable. During the wait, you always have some type of entertainment. This includes DJs, constant lights, smoke machines, and people performing ‘haunted’ acts. While the wait for haunted houses can be terrifying because your stomach is in shambles, Azra makes sure that you are getting hyped. Once you are at the front of the line, you enter the eerie door. My experience inside the haunted house was incredible. I love the spine-chilling feeling you get when on the premises, so personally the jumpscares were incredible; I loved it and I definitely jumped. There were things jumping out and shocking you constantly, so if you don’t like that Azra might not be for you. While I love the thrill, the people in your group may not, so Azra makes sure that they make you laugh to get your mind off the alarming features. Overall, I loved my experience at Azra and I definitely recommend it.

Ghosts on the Balcony ★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆
Hosted at the Birmingham Emagine, Ghosts on the Balcony, turns the movie theater into a spooky haunted house. Although the name has “ghosts” in it, I wouldn’t let that fool you. Ghosts on the Balcony is a fun haunted house to go to, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it scary. The main idea of this haunted house is narratives. By narratives I mean the actors tell spooky stories from room to room while others jump out at you or create special effects in the room such as fog or holograms. While walking throughout the theater you are listening to a whole spooky storyline. While the experience is enjoyable and funny, if you’re looking for a real fright, Ghosts on the Balcony should not be your go to. This house will be good for kids, or people who are easily scared.

Erebus ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
Erebus, one of the top rated haunted attractions in Michigan, will make you cry. People are constantly jumping out at you, even grabbing your ankles. This excitement definitely makes up for the extended amount of time you spend waiting in line. Although this house is very highly rated, it is not for everyone. Many individuals leave this house not wanting to go back, but others are dying to go back. This is because of the way they scare you, touch you, or in some cases, splitting you up from your group. I definitely recommend this house to those who enjoy the scare, but those who don’t, should not go. Unless you’re willing to challenge your fears!

There are many great options where you can spend your spooky experience. If you’re like me, and love a good scare, Erebus is for you. If you are with younger kids, or people who don’t love to be scared out of their minds but would still love a great haunted house experience, then Ghosts on the Balcony is your spot. If you’re looking for a good laugh, run to Azra now! There are many different accommodations depending on your bravery. Personally I think everyone should try to overcome their fears because all of these haunted houses leave you with lots of laughter, and an urge to come back the following year.
