Student Leadership is a class offered at BHS that plans a ton of school-wide events throughout the year, such as Homecoming, spirit weeks, pep rallies, and more. At the end of each school year, they hold an election within the class to pick the new board members to lead the class the following year. The positions that people are able to run for are President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary, and each role comes with its own responsibilities. The students who were elected to the board for the 2026-27 school year are Lucy Sousanis (President), Carson Cynowa (Vice President), Grace Franco (Treasurer), and Vivien Rittenbery (Secretary).
Sousanis, an upcoming senior, said about her new position, “I’m looking forward to being more in charge and seeing what we can improve with the class.” Being the class president comes with new responsibilities like helping Mrs. Nixon lead the class, running the Monday Meetings, and overseeing the committees and events that are planned throughout the year. “I think the most challenging part of being president will be making sure everyone’s voices are heard as well as representing and including all of the student body,” explained Sousanis. “Working with and connecting with people is the main thing that will help me with this role.” She said that her main goal for this coming school year is to “just have a positive place for people to be involved with the school and come up with some new events, and overall just have fun.” She has contributed a lot to Student Leadership this past year as the Secretary, and she is excited to play an even bigger role as the president. “I’m very passionate and dedicated to this class, and I love all the things we do,” Sousanis said.
Cynowa, an upcoming senior, explained that she wants to try to strengthen the part that the Vice President plays in class. “I feel like in past years it’s been kind of a minor role, but it truly does play a big impact on our class, so I’m looking to strengthen it and just have fun with it,” she said. The new responsibilities that Cynowa will take on are being in charge of the job lists that go out to the class, and being with the new members, helping them in the class as well as building their leadership skills.
This will be her third year in Student Leadership, and she is excited to be in a position that lets her contribute more. “I think the biggest challenge is just within myself, trying to grow within this position and push myself to my best,” Cynowa explained. “I’m a dedicated person, and I am deeply in love with Student Leadership and all it’s done for me, and I want to share that with everyone,” she added. Cynowa’s goal for the upcoming school year is “to keep promoting the class and keeping the friendships and relationships close because it is truly a family.”
Franco, an upcoming senior, explained that she is “really excited to teach the new members about the class and leave it better than I found it.” Her new responsibilities as Treasurer include resetting the cash box every week, tracking their profits, and monitoring the budget over the course of the year. Franco also explained that “one of our goals for next year is to get the whole class more involved with the treasury and the things that I have to do, but that might be challenging because it’s something we’ve never done before.” Franco has been a member of Student Leadership since her Sophomore year. “There’s a bond in the class that helps us better the school because we’re all close together and understand each other. Going forward, I hope that everyone is still involved with each other and with the school,” she said.
The final board member for the upcoming school year is Rittenbery. She is an upcoming junior, and she explained that in this new position, she is “looking forward to being able to talk and connect more with everyone in the class.” Rittenbery’s new responsibility is to do all of the social media, like running the class TikTok and Instagram. She said that next year she is going to try to create and run a Facebook page for the class. “I think my biggest challenge will be managing my time; staying on top of all the posting and running the social media, balanced with my commitments in the class,” Rittenbery explained. Next year will be her second year in the class, and she has “been really committed this year, and I’ve proven myself to be a good leader.” Rittenberry added, “I connect well with everyone in the class, which is important for being in a leadership position, and I’m excited to keep connecting and bonding with everyone.” Her goal for the upcoming school year is “to implement the class more into the student body and to get everyone more involved.”
All four board members are excited to contribute more to Student Leadership while also contributing more to the entire school. They each have goals that they want to accomplish next year, as well as a shared goal for the class to grow. Whether it is through the events they plan or their dedication to the student body, these board members are going to leave a lasting impact on Student Leadership and the school in general. They have already shown their commitment in their previous years in the class and strive to strengthen these roles through creativity and positivity.
